The shipment includes 4,000 medical biosafety suits; 3,000 disposable medical gowns; 3,000 shoe covers; 4,500 head covers; 10,650 masks; 700 plastic face shields; 42,000 gloves; 100 infrared thermometers; 200 mercury thermometers; 30 sensor-activated hand sanitizer dispensers; and 500 liters of hand sanitizer.
An earlier shipment that arrived on 17 November 2020 delivered 500 liters of hand sanitizer for use by the university in Abkhazia in an effort to keep ASU students and faculty safe while attending classes. UNDP has a long-running program at the university dedicated to expanding opportunities for foreign language instruction and applying information and communications technologies. As part of the COVID response, UNDP is now helping ASU to establish a molecular diagnostics program to train laboratory professionals.
The combined value of the two shipments is USD 62,000. Both were funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through the Horizons project implemented by UNDP. These were the ninth and tenth shipments of COVID-related supplies that UNDP has delivered to Abkhazia since the outbreak of the pandemic. All UNDP shipments to Abkhazia are facilitated by the Dialogue Coordination Mechanism, which UNDP has administered jointly with the European Union since 2010.
