THE GOVERNMENT OF ABKHAZIA VALUES THE WORK OF THE ICRC MISSION

Sukhum. September 1, 2021. Apsnypress. Prime Minister Alexander Ankvab met with representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross on Missing Persons in the Caucasus Daniel McSweeney, Head of the ICRC Mission Nathan Reyes and Assistant to the Head of the Mission Boris Kazanba.

The parties discussed issues of the current work of the ICRC mission in the republic, in particular, the issues of searching for persons missing on the territory of Abkhazia during the 1992-1993 War of Abkhazia.

ICRC representative on missing persons in the Caucasus Daniel McSweeney emphasized that implementation degree of the program to search for and identify the remains of those killed in the war in Abkhazia is 10% of the total number of missing persons, while, for example, in the Balkans this figure reaches 70%.

He noted that the ICRC intends to build capacity through close cooperation with the government and to improve numbers in Abkhazia as well, in order to alleviate the suffering of the relatives.

In turn, Alexander Ankvab assured that the Government still appreciates the work carried out by the ICRC Mission and is ready to provide all-round support and assistance in organizational and other processes.

Boris Kazanba also spoke about an important and relevant area of ​​the ICRC's work - providing assistance to socially vulnerable segments of the republic's population during the fight against the pandemic.

“Elderly single people, especially those who live far from towns and developed infrastructure have a very difficult time during a pandemic. Support is also needed for healthcare workers, including those responsible for the health of prisoners. The International Committee of the Red Cross in Abkhazia has focused on helping these particular categories of the population, ”Kazanba said.

ICRC representatives asked what type of assistance could be most needed during the pandemic in 2021 and 2022.

The participants of the meeting expressed their readiness to interact with the government on all the issues discussed.
