Thursday, 17 September 2020 22:52 682

Sukhum. September 17. Apsnypress. Deputy Minister Irakli Tuzhba met with the co-chairs of the Geneva International Discussions on Security and Stability in the Transcaucasus - EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Toivo Klaar, UN Representative Cihan Sultanoglu and OSCE Special Representative for the South Caucasus Rudolf Mikhalka.

The main topic was the agenda of the upcoming 51st round of the Geneva Discussions and topical issues of regional security and stability in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Irakli Tuzhba emphasized that the most important and urgent problem on the agenda of Geneva discussions for the Abkhaz side is the agreement on the non-use of force. He noted with regret that work in this direction has been carried out for a long time, however, it still has not given tangible results due to extremely unconstructive position of the Georgian side. This process is in a frozen state.

Tuzhba informed the meeting participants about the intention of the Abkhaz side to continue work in this direction in order to find compromise solutions that reflect the interests of all participants in the process.

Deputy Foreign Minister also expressed the serious concern of the Abkhaz side in connection with the constant build-up of military-technical cooperation between Georgia and NATO and called on the co-chairs to pay attention to this problem in order to avoid an escalation of tension in the region.

There took place an exchange of views on the prospects for resuming the work of the Incidents  for  Prevention and Response Mechanism in Gal, as an additional tool in the work of the Geneva Discussions. The parties agreed that situation in Gal region remains stable and safe.

The meeting participants also discussed the agenda of the second working group aimed at resolving humanitarian issues.

The next 51st round of the Geneva Discussions on Security and Stability in Transcaucasia is scheduled for October 6-7, 2020.
