RA MFA: WE CAN TALK ABOUT NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN ABKHAZIA AND GEORGIA ONLY IF TBILISI REVIEWS ITS COURSE TOWARDS ABKHAZIA AND AGREE ON THE DOCUMENT ON THE NON-USE OF FORCE

Sukhum. December 23, 2020. Apsnypress. It will be possible to talk about the possibility of negotiations between Abkhazia and Georgia only if Tbilisi radically revises its course towards Abkhazia, proceeds to agree on a document on the non-use of force between Abkhazia and Georgia within the framework of the Geneva discussions, and abandons the policy of international isolation of our country. This is the commentary made by the RA MFA in connection with the statement of the Georgian Minister for Reconciliation and Civil Equality.

Commentary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia

Minister of Georgia for Reconciliation and Civil Equality Teya Akhvlediani proposed “to expand the platform of informal dialogue and cooperation with the Abkhaz and Ossetian communities, which will be based on common interests ". According to her, Georgia did not stop this dialogue in order to improve the legal and humanitarian situation of the population, including in the context of the coronavirus pandemic. This process, in her opinion, will continue and become even more intense.

As it is clear from this statement by the Georgian official dealing with "reconciliation issues", Georgia's approaches to the Republic of Abkhazia remain unchanged. Tbilisi perceives Abkhazia exclusively as a "community", "de facto regime", "occupied territory", etc. It follows from this that the dialogue between Abkhazia and Georgia in the mind of the Georgian minister can only be informal.

However, such an approach, no matter how Tbilisi expands the "platform of dialogue", cannot lead to anything constructive. The Republic of Abkhazia does not intend to conduct such a dialogue with Georgia, and the very idea of such a dialogue should be recognized as absolutely unrealistic.

The possibility of negotiations between Abkhazia and Georgia can only be talked about if Tbilisi radically revises its course towards the Republic of Abkhazia, proceeds to agree on a document on the non-use of force between Abkhazia and Georgia within the framework of the Geneva discussions and abandons the policy of international isolation of our country. Only after this there can be formed conditions  for normalization of relations between the two states.
