On the night of March 15-16, 1993, the Abkhaz formations crossed the Gumista River and captured strategically important heights near Sukhum. Motorized rifle subunits were supposed to force several sections of the Gumista River, with air and sea support, break through the first defensive line of the enemy and develop a further offensive to liberate Sukhum. However, the operation was not successful.

After bloody battles on March 17 and 18, the Abkhazian units were forced to retreat to their original positions. The soldiers of the Abkhaz army admit that the March offensive was the most difficult.

222 soldiers of the Abkhaz army were killed, several hundred people were injured, and 23 people missed in the March battles for the capital of Abkhazia.
