The heroic defenders of Abkhazia gave a tough rebuff to the invaders in the very first hours. August 14 is a tragic day, and at the same time it personifies the resilience and heroism of our people. The Patriotic War of Abkhazia lasted 413 days and nights. Under the command of the national leader Vladislav Ardzinba our fighters fought a fierce struggle for the freedom of Apsny.

On this mournful day we bow our heads to the memory of those who died for freedom of the Motherland, the sons and daughters of Abkhazia, volunteer soldiers. Their feat will serve future generations as an example of true patriotism, selfless service to the Fatherland.
