Sukhum. June 16, 2021. Apsnypress. Health Minister Eduard Butba met with representatives of the World Health Organization, who arrived in Abkhazia to provide humanitarian and advisory assistance to the republic.

WHO representative Silva Domante told Eduard Butba about the organization's activities in Abkhazia.

Last year, WHO assessed the preparation of the health care system in Abkhazia for COVID-19 and presented its recommendations for effectively combating coronavirus infection. The Abkhaz side has implemented them in full.

Last week, WHO delivered additional equipment for two new PCR laboratories to Abkhazia as humanitarian aid, as well as personal protective equipment for 8 hospitals in the republic.

“Today, experts are providing advice on the installation of equipment in two new PCR laboratories in Gagra and Ochamchira,” said Silva Domante.

He informed Minister that WHO experts are analyzing the provision of the cold chain, which contributes to the preservation of pharmaceuticals in low temperatures from the moment of production to the moment of use.

“So far, there are few vaccines against COVID-19 requiring storage at an appropriate temperature in Abkhazia. But in case of an increase in the number of doses, it will become necessary to prepare appropriate conditions for their storage and transportation. In the future, the cold chain may be useful not only for storing vaccines, but also for other drugs, ” said Silva Domante.

During the working meeting, they discussed issues of combating coronavirus infection, monitoring of medical institutions in Abkhazia by WHO specialists in order to provide humanitarian assistance with medicines and medical supplies.

“We provided Abkhazian hospitals with videoconferencing equipment and conduct online trainings on the management of seriously ill patients, infection control and laboratory diagnostics,” said Silva Domante.

The representative of the World Health Organization informed Minister about the desire to open a WHO office in Abkhazia. Eduard Butba supported the idea of opening the office and thanked the guests for population support during the pandemic.
