On August 3, the State Minister of Georgia presented a report on the work done over the year and shared plans for the coming years.
Speaking on the work done related to "informal communication with the Abkhaz society", Akhvlediani mentioned some examples of successful cooperation. “The Peace Fund for a Better Future has begun its work, as well as financing of Georgian-Abkhaz business projects with the aim of developing trade and economic ties. Up to 100 projects aimed at restoring trust have been launched in Abkhazia,” the minister said. In addition, Akhvlediani announced a gradual restoration of the movement of citizens across the Ingur bridge, which is used by up to a thousand people every day. The minister also said that the Georgian government and international organizations have provided assistance in the fight against coronavirus to the residents of Abkhazia in the amount of 4 million lari. Akhvlediani also touched upon the issue of Irakli Bebua, a citizen of Georgia convicted in Abkhazia. The minister expressed hope that the issue of his release will be resolved in the near future.
“Akhvlediani’s message about joint Georgian-Abkhaz business projects needs to be clarified. Citizens of the Republic of Abkhazia do not take part in joint Georgian-Abkhaz business projects. If any of the citizens of Georgia living in Gal district considered it possible to participate in such projects, then this can hardly be regarded as "Georgian-Abkhaz business projects aimed at restoring trust," the RA MFA commented.
As for the statement on the movement of citizens across the Ingur Bridge, the Foreign Ministry of Abkhazia draws attention to the fact that "the Georgian authorities have nothing to do with this decision."
“The leadership of the Republic of Abkhazia came up with this humanitarian initiative and met halfway the residents of the Gal region who needed to cross the Abkhaz-Georgian state border,” the RA Foreign Ministry said.
Referring to the issue on providing assistance in the fight against coronavirus to Abkhazia, the RA Foreign Ministry emphasizes that Abkhazia has not received and is not receiving any assistance from the Georgian government. The aid received in Sukhum as part of the fight against coronavirus comes exclusively from international organizations.
The aforementioned citizen of Georgia Irakli Bebua was convicted in the Republic of Abkhazia for the crime he committed and is serving his sentence in accordance with the court's decision. “The issue of his early release is not being considered,” the RA MFA's commentary says.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia strongly recommends Ms. Akhvlediani "not to be carried away by facts distortion and conjectures spreading."
“There is a strong impression that the Ministry of Reconciliation and Civil Equality is ready to voice outright fables and mislead the Georgian public for the sake of using the budget. The department headed by T. Akhvlediani should abandon this practice, which, unfortunately, was adhered to by the former leaders of this ministry, ” the RA MFA comments.
