RA MFA: “THE ABKHAZIAN STATE'S RECOGINITION WAS A LEGAL STAGE IN IMPLEMENTING THE LEGAL RIGHT TO NATIONAL SELF-DETERMINATION OF THE PEOPLE OF ABKHAZIA”

Sukhum. August 5, 2021. Apsnypress. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia commented on the statement of a group of UN Security Council member countries.

On August 4, there was issued a statement demanding from Russia to withdraw troops from Abkhazia and to reconsider the recognition of the independence of the republic by a group of UN Security Council member countries, including the United States, Great Britain, France, Ireland, Norway and Estonia.

“Today we once again call on the Russian Federation to immediately withdraw its troops and security forces, as well as to reconsider the recognition of the so-called independence of the Georgian territories of Abkhazia and Tskhinval region of South Ossetia,” the document says. The document was also signed by Albania, which will soon receive a seat in the UN Security Council. The statement is timed to the 13th anniversary of the August 2008 events.

“It is regrettable that the states that signed this statement over the past years did not realize the irreversibility of the changes that took place in Transcaucasia after the tragic events of August 2008. At the same time, this circumstance does not in any way affect the new political realities that have developed in the region, which were a natural result of the adventurous course of the then leadership of Georgia, ” the RA Foreign Ministry said.

As for the decision of the Russian Federation on the independence recognition of the Republic of Abkhazia it is not subject to revision and is final.

The RA Foreign Ministry reminds that the decision on the recognition of independence and the establishment of diplomatic relations is the sovereign right of the states participating in international communication.

"The implementation of this right does not conflict with international legal norms and does not require consent or approval from other states," the RA MFA states.

The RA Foreign Ministry also draws attention to the fact that the Abkhazian state's recognition was a legal stage in implementing the legal right to national self-determination of the People of Abkhazia. The aspiration of the Republic of Abkhazia to acquire state sovereignty has historical, moral and legal grounds.

“Western countries follow the vicious practice of double standards, prefering to listen only to the point of view of the Georgian side, instead of jointly searching for ways to resolve existing contradictions”  the RA Foreign Ministry believes.

“Endless appeals demanding the withdrawal of recognition and other unacceptable conditions cannot affect the situation that has developed in the region after 2008. Only an adequate and constructive position related to the interests of the Republic of Abkhazia can testify to a real understanding of the aspirations of the people of Abkhazia, ” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia says.
