RA MFA: APPEALS OF THE NATO SECRETARY GENERAL CANNOT BE A GUIDE TO ACTION NEITHER FOR THE REPUBLIC OF ABKHAZIA OR FOR THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION

Thursday, 01 October 2020 20:17 408

Sukhum. September 29, 2020. Apsnypress. The Foreign Ministry of Abkhazia made a commentary on the statement by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. On September 29 in Brussels, NATO Secretary General J. Stoltenberg during a press conference with Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia made a number of statements in which, in particular, he called for accelerating preparations for Georgia's admission to NATO. Stoltenberg did not forget to mention the continued support of the North Atlantic Alliance for Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also called on Russia to withdraw recognition of the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

"The appeals of the NATO Secretary General cannot serve as a guide to action either for the Republic of Abkhazia or for the Russian Federation, and cannot change either the political status of Abkhazia or the Abkhaz-Russian strategic partnership," the Abkhazian Foreign Ministry said.

The RA Ministry of Foreign Affairs draws attention to the fact that "in Abkhazia, such open encouragement of Tbilisi's military ambitions in the context of growing tension in the Caucasus region causes justified indignation."

"The NATO leadership either turns a blind eye to what is happening today in the South Caucasus, or deliberately plays to exacerbate the situation," the RA Foreign Ministry said.

The RA Ministry of Foreign Affairs believes that the meeting of the NATO Secretary General with the Prime Minister of Georgia in Brussels is a large extent of political nature and is intended to fix the support of the ruling party in Georgia in the conditions of the upcoming parliamentary elections.

The RA MFA calls on the NATO leadership to show prudence and refrain from statements that create a heavy atmosphere of military hysteria in the region.
